This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together exists a intense examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
